Houston Astros

March 10th 2010 14:51
Can the Houston Astros contend for a playoff berth in 2010? Let's take a closer look at what they can or can't bring to the table.

Roy Oswalt, Wandy Rodriguez, and Brian Moehler are a good one two three punch. Add the new addition of Brett Myers and you are set. People think he will be the reason the Stros will be succusful. I think it was a great move on their part and as long as he pulls out 13 wins Houston will be sitting pretty. Do not forget about young righty Bud Norris. He rounds out the rotation with a telling upside. Myers is a veteren with a meaningful downside. He will produce as long as he is healthy.

Now to the lineup with the dangorous foursome of Michael Bourn, Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, and Hunter Pence. The rest of the lineup is nothing to write home about. Berkman and Lee are getting older but could still be great trade bait if the Astros are not in the playoff race. There is a lack of prospects in the farm system. Tommy Manzella is one of them prospects that i am talking about. Let's keep an eye on him and hope to god i am wrong about the farm system.

The bullpen if you want to call it that will be lacking this year. Last year's workhorse of the pen, Tim Byrdak, will be returning. Byrdak has not played on a decent team in his career which started in 1998. LaTroy Hawkins will not be returning which could be a good thing. Instead Matt Lindstrom will be closer with Brandon Lyon as set up. Not a very scary bullpen at all.

Geoff Blum will be your pinch hitter in 2010. He won the World Series in 2005. I have no idea how any team can consider him a bat off the bench. Geoff is worlds better in the feild than hitting. Maybe by the trade deadline we will be seeing him start over Manzella or even Pedro Feliz.

Lineup
1. Michael Bourne- 2009 Gold Glove Award Winner
2. 2B Kaz Matsui- 1998 Pacific Leauge MVP
3. 1B Lance Berkman- 5x All Star
4. LF Carlos Lee- 3x All Star
5. RF Hunter Pence- 2009 All Star
6. 3B Pedro Feliz- 2008 World Series Champion
7. C J.R. Towles- 31 career RBIs
8. SS Tommy Manzella- 0 career home runs

Rotation
1. Roy Oswalt- 3x All Star
2. Wandy Rodriguez- 51-52 career record
3. Brett Myers- 2008 World Series Champion
4. Brian Moehler- 831 career strikeouts
5. Bud Norris- 2008 Arizona Fall Leauge Rising Star

Prediction: How Towles can start over Humberto Quintero has baffled me. To answer the question that i asked at the beginning of this article no Houston can not contend. The biggest strenght that they have and hopefully build on is the top three in the rotation. The biggest waekness is the middle infeild. the bullpen has holes but can be taken care of. Manzella i'll let prove himself but Matsui is not the guy the Astros need at second. Houston will be in dead last in the N.L. Central anywhere from 21.5 to 30 games out. 65-97 or worse to end 2010.

Cincinnati Reds

March 9th 2010 16:29
The Reds had little offense in 2009 and did very little to address it for 2010. They picked up SS Orlando Cabrera and resigned C Ramon Herdanez. The Reds bats of the bench will consit of Jonny Gomes and Aaron Miles who was acquired form Oakland. The Reds offense does have some exceptional young talent. Joey Votto is one of the best hitters in the National Leauge. Drew Stubbs is a favorable defensive CF. Jay Bruce is not even 23 yet. His production will be offset because of the struggling veterens. The Reds have no sure fire youngsters comming through the farm system. If any of the starters go down there is no one to back them up.

The Reds have a good pitching staff. Former top prospect Homer Bailey showed that he will be a force in 2009 after a horrible 2008. I would not put it past Dusty Baker to make a major mistake when picking the fifth starter in the rotation. The Reds are very well covered incase of an implosion. I don't see Champman starting in the majors this year. The Reds have enough good arms Cordero, Rhodes, Burton, Owings in the bullpen that they will be just fine.

Lineup
1. CF Drew Stubbs: .267 career batting average
2. SS Orlando Cabrera: 2x Gold Glove winner
3. 1B Joey Votto: National Leauge Player of the week in 2009
4. 2B Brandon Phillips: Gold Glove Winner 2008
5. 3B Scott Rolen: 5x All Star
6. LF Jonny Gomes: 86 career home runs
7. RF Jay Bruce: 2x Baseball America Minor Leauge All Star
8. C Ryan Hanigan: 22 career RBIs

Rotation
1. Bronson Arroyo: Joe Nuzhall Good Guy Award
2. Johnny Cueto: 20-25 career record
3. Aaron Harang: 4.24 career ERA
4. Homer Bailey: National Leauge Player Of The Week 2009
5. Micah Owings: Silver Slugger Award Winner

Prediction: The Reds have plenty of talent at the big leauge level. I love the middle of the lineup, but the rest of it won't be that hot. The rotation is needs a first-class number 5 starter. Could be a sleeper team like everyone is saying, but i don't see them being a World Series contender. The Reds will end in 4th place in the N.L. Central with a 66-96 record.

Chicago Cubs

March 8th 2010 15:43
Spring Training is underway and Carlos Zambrano looked like an ace in his first apperance. The Diamondbacks have a good lineup but he retired 6 hitters. Zambrano is tyring to get his skills back that made him a consistant 15 game winner. He finally realized that the harder you work the better you will get. Zambrano has to win 16-20 games for his team of the Cubs to be a contender to the World Series.

The Cubs do not have a timetable set for the return of Angel Guzman. He threw 30 pitches on flat ground about a week ago. Manger, front office, and fans are all frustrated with his latest injury. Guzman first hurt his knee coming into camp and now it's his shoulder. Guzman's injury will just open the door for another guy.

Lineup
1. LF Alfonso Soriano Led AL in stolen bases in 2002
2. SS Ryan Theriot 153 career RBIs
3. 1B Derrek Lee Led NL in doubles in 2005
4. 3B Aramis Ramirez 2008 Hank Aaron Award
5. CF Marlon Byrd 60 career home runs
6. RF Kosuke Fukudome 2006 Central League MVP
7. 2B Mike Fontenot .266 career batting average
8. C Koyie Hill 49 career RBIs

Rotation
1. Ryan Dempster 2x all star 2000 and 2008
2. Carlos Zambrano No hitter in 2008
3. Ted Lilly 2x all star 2004 and 2009
4. Randy Wells 12-10 career record
5. Tom Gorzelanny 292 career strikeouts

Prediction: The outfeild is strong offensively. The infeild is solid offensively and defensively. Soto hit a wall last year, Hill is a good backup but think after Soto's slump Hill is an ok starter. I don't see Silva being a starter after Lilly returns in Mayish. Marmol will close but is not that great. The outfeild is deep with Hoffpauir and Nady as backups. Need at least another all star starter to make a run at being World Series champs. Will be a contender this year. 1 game out of the NL Central. 85-77 record.

Washington Nationals

March 7th 2010 19:43
The Washingotn Nationals goal in 2010 is to finish at .500. The team has improved greatly this offseason. The defense can't do any worse than last year. Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez is a great move to help their young pitchers come along. Cristian Guzman will saty at second base with the big pickup of Adam Kennedy.

June 21, 2010 is the date that Stephen Strasburg is set to make is MLB debut vs. the Royals. He was their first round pick in 2009, and signed a 15.1 million dollar deal before even throwing one pitch to a major league hitter. Strasburg will bat right handed, and stands at 6'4" and weighs 220 lbs. His fastball has been clocked at 103 mph, but is usually 95-97 mph. 79-81 mph is how fast Strasburg's curveball has been clocked at

Philadelphia Phillies

March 6th 2010 17:07
Three consecutive trips to the World Series, is that what the Phillies have in store. This years Phillies are right in line to do that. It has reached the 100 win mark just two times in franchise history, this year could be the third. The Phillies really had nothing to do this offseason, the team was fine just how it was. They just needed a little tweaking.

The whole bullpen wasn't bad last year just closer Brad Lidge. Charlie Manual belived in Lidge, as did i despit his 11 blown saves and 0-8 record. When given the chance in the postseason he delivered, going 3 for 3 in save chances. With the best power/speed lineup in baseball Lidge will have his chances to show 2009 was a fluke. The Phillies need the bullpen including Brad Lidge to be better than ever to win it all

New York Mets

March 5th 2010 16:45
Will the Mets be as disappointing as 2009? Last year was just so sad for the Mets. That is all over and now they have good reason to look forward to 2010. Bay signed a four year deal and Reyes is back.

Mets have a great ace at the top of the rotation. Johan Santana who in 2009 had a late season injury that caused him for the first time since 2004 he didn't start 33 games. He should be healthy to start the season, and is one of the best in baseball when 100

Florida Marlins

March 4th 2010 15:15
Is it finally time for Florida Marlin fans to celebrate. Previously when contracts got to be too much they would send them on their way out of town. Even with that they were in the top 5 in runs last year. Marlins signed free agents in the offseason as well, but only to minor league deals.

The big question for the Marlins is who will be at the corners. Cantu and Sanchez are your starters if the season was to start today. Morrison and Jimenez still have a month to prove their worth before opening day at the Mets. Jimenez, with a month of Spring Training has the upper hand being that he is a lefty on a squad lacking left handed bats

Atlanta Braves

March 3rd 2010 18:59
The Atlanta Braves can they get back to the succes they had in the 90s. Not this year not in my opinion. Bobby Cox will not return after this year so you know the Braves would love to win the World Series again before he leaves. Their lineup is not as good as in years past mostly because of injury. Pitching will be the key to the Braves succes this year.Lowe and Jurrjuns are still number one and two starters. Moylan is still the work horse of the bullpen with new closer Wagner in Atlanta for one year with an option for next year. They did trade away Rafael Soriano for Jesse Chavez, and let Mike Gonzalez sign with the Orioles. The Braves do have the best rotation in the National League. "Their starting rotation, one through five, is going to hold some teams down," Braves TV analyst Brian Jordan said. The bullpen has been upgraded to with additions of Wagner and Saito.
Troy Glaus is another major addition to the Braves in the offseason. Beacause of shoulder surgery, Glaus didn't play until Sept. 2 in 2009 and only hit .172 in 32 at-bats. Braves first basemen hit only 19 homers last year, and most of them (12) came from late season pickup Adam LaRoche. A healthy Glaus will help them get what they been looking for and that is run support.
Alot of Braves fans wanna see Jason Heyward on the opening day roster. With McLouth, Diaz, and Cabrera there is no need to rush Heyward up so quickly. Heyward can hit for average, power, can run, and throw, he is a true all around player

World Series Champs Phinally

October 30th 2008 14:19
Baseball season is Phinally over and the Phillies are the winners - the champs - the "team to beat", after 28 years of never coming close or coming up short. THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES ARE THE 2008 CHAMPIONS IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL!!!When I look back at the season through all the highs and lows that this team endured, I had a feeling about them.

There was something special about this group of guys and every single one of them contributed. Sure, they had me seating at the edge of my seat many times. They were even nerve-racking to watch other times. But when August came and I hadn't been to a single game after following them all season, I knew it was time to get there - to Citizen's Bank Park. These guys had a chance and I could sense it. My family went to that game and the Phillies beat the Dodgers. In September, exactly one month later, my husband and I went to a game and saw them beat the Braves

WS Game 1: Winning with Cole

October 23rd 2008 13:32
For fans of the team in red, the first win was big. It's exactly what is needed when in a series of this magnitude and doing it on the opposing teams home turf makes it better. As usual, Cole Hamels pitched magnificant. And what seems typical of the Phillies offense with him pitching, they blew opportunity after opportunity.

Of course it's a great time for Philly to get that win. You take the big W any way you can get them. Nevertheless, we hate to see our team strand potential runs at the plate, and the Phillies can really get into a grove of doing just that. For those that have been following the Phillies all season, this kind of thing has been done before - many times. Hamels should have a lot more wins under his belt from the regular season; the offense just doesn't pull through enough for him. Thank goodness for his superb pitching ability to limit runs and get out of jams
