Phillies Power
October 10th 2008 13:52
Once upon a time, when I discussed Phillies baseball with people in previous years, I used to make a statement, "You can't rely on homeruns to win games." Some people agreed with me. But after last nights game I'm thinking, what the heck was I talking about? Did I even know what I was saying? Maybe that remark was true for those particular seasons, but it certainly hasn't been true for the Phillies this year. I would say that the team in red has won a lot of games and got to where they are now because of super power hitting homeruns. I'm not complaining now, and neither is Philadelphia.
Last night held the first game of the NLCS, Phillies vs. Dodgers. The Dodgers quickly took a 2-0 lead, but didn't shake up the Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels. He was superb and only got better later in the game. The Phillies didn't seem to be getting anywhere with Lowe pitching for the Dodgers. Then things started to roll and Hamels even came up with a hit himself. But the Phillies didn't score yet. It was Shane Victorino taking advantage of an overthrown ball to first and ending up at second base on the error. Next, it was Chase Utley stepping up to the plate. Wham!!! He hits a two-run homerun making it a 2-2 game. Thank you Chase! Howard comes up to the plate and he can't get anything going. Pat 'the bat' Burrell, formerly boo.ooo..oo.d by fans in previous years, steps up to the plate. WHACK!!! This ball is long gone! A single run homer puts the Phillies in the lead 3-2, and they hold on to it to win the game. Thank you Pat. Thank you, and your bat.
There's no doubt, the Phillies have power. I'm waiting for the big man to show his stuff. Who am I talking about you ask? Ryan Howard. He's due for a long ball ...come on Howard...don't stop now...just hit that ball..over the wall.
GO PHILLIES!!! Keep those bats swinging boys.
