September Call Ups
September 3rd 2010 12:10
Does the game of baseball need to have September 1st call ups? For the first five months of the season teams have a 25 man roster. Then right when teams are making the playoff push boom it gets expanded to 40. It is like Spring Training all over again. Managers no longer have to "manage" a game.
Some people say it is stupid to even argue about September call ups. It is a chance to see the minor leaguers that are getting paid just as much as most of the other guys on the team. All teams, no matter what market big or small have the same opportunity to get quality AAA and AA guys. Every farm system has close to 100 players any way, so if ya can't afford to bring one up there is always a back up plan. That means if the Giants need to use 15 pitchers in a game to beat the Phillies then so be it.
Me personally, i do not like September call ups. You wait until atleast 12 teams are looking to make a final run and bring up people that could hurt you or even help you just to send them back a month later. I think your spring roster should carry over to the beginning of the season and then slowly cut it down month by month. So when May starts you have your 25 man roster and thats who takes you through the season, and no call ups in September.
To answer the question, should teams be able to expand their rosters this late in the season? I say no. I do not like it, but i do not have a problem with it. Getting to see young talent that normally you wouldn't see is great. I just don't think that every team really benifits from the call ups at the end of the season.
