St. Louis Cardinals
March 13th 2010 17:02
The St. Louis Cardinals were not projected to win the NL Central last year. They won by 7 and a half games then fizzled out of the postseason. After spending 120 million on Matt Holliday anything but a first place finish will be unacceptable for St. Louis.
Where are the weaknesses on the Cardinals team? We know it is not their lineup, starting pitching, or even lack of money. On they surface they look to have everything a championship team needs. So what is it then that St. Louis is lacking? Lack of experience at third base. David Freese is the front runner. Tony La Russa never just hands out jobs to rookies. Freese's main compition will come from Tyler Greene, Joe Mather, and Felipe Lopez. Freese was the projected starter last year but struggled and spent most of 2009 in AAA. Freese impressed everyone in a late season call up, which is what led him to be the front runner after Mark DeRosa was not re-signed.
Mark McGwire and his steriod past, will that be a distraction? When he comes to the big market cities like New York, Philadelphia, or Boston he will have to address the past. McGwire hass been doing a good job this spring of answering questions and being a good hitting coach. La Russa was the one that pushed to bring him back into the game of baseball. McGwire has the knowledge to be a shipshape hitting coach. After about two weeks of spring training is that it is true. The fanfare around McGwire has been very minimal.
Lineup
1. 2B Skip Schumaker- 103 career RBIs
2. CF Colby Rasmus- 16 career Home Runs
3. 1B Albert Pujols- 8x All Star
4. Matt Holliday- 3x All Star
5. RF Ryan Ludwick- 2008 All Star
6. C Yadier Molina- 2x Natioal League Champion
7. 3B David Freese- .323 career average
8. SS Brendan Ryan- 59 career RBIs
Rotation
1. Chris Carpenter- 2x All Star
2. Adam Wainwright- 2006 World Series Champion
3. Kyle Lohse- 4.68 career ERA
4. Brad Penny- 2003 World Series Champion
5. Kyle McClellan- 6-11 career record
Prediction: One of the top 3-6 tandems in baseball. Carpenter, Wainwright were the best 1-2 last year add in Penny and you got a success story for the Cards. Felipe Lopez was second last year in runs scored and can play anywhere in the infeild. La Russa is looked up to by his peers. Any team that has Pujols is a contender. I think they just need to get better on the left side of the infeild in order to win the big one. St. Louis will be in the World Series but won't win it. The Cardinals will win the Central again. 91-71
