WS Game 1: Winning with Cole
October 23rd 2008 13:32
For fans of the team in red, the first win was big. It's exactly what is needed when in a series of this magnitude and doing it on the opposing teams home turf makes it better. As usual, Cole Hamels pitched magnificant. And what seems typical of the Phillies offense with him pitching, they blew opportunity after opportunity.
Of course it's a great time for Philly to get that win. You take the big W any way you can get them. Nevertheless, we hate to see our team strand potential runs at the plate, and the Phillies can really get into a grove of doing just that. For those that have been following the Phillies all season, this kind of thing has been done before - many times. Hamels should have a lot more wins under his belt from the regular season; the offense just doesn't pull through enough for him. Thank goodness for his superb pitching ability to limit runs and get out of jams.
The bullpen wasn't too shabby either. Madson came out in the eighth and did an amazing job getting the three outs. Then Brad Lidge did his part with 1-2-3 outs, and it was game over. The Phillies win 3-2 over the Rays.
Cole held the Rays at two after giving up a homerun, and a run that was scored in the 4th and 5th innings. This was key in the Phillies getting the win.
Pedro Feliz and Victorino had some big hits, as did Chase Utley when he started things of for the Phillies in the 1st inning, hitting a two-run long ball. Carlos Ruiz had an RBI bringing in the 3rd run for the Phillies.
Fans can only hope to see better offense from Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard in the future World Series games.
GO PHILLIES!!!!!
